Humankind’s love affair with yoga can be traced back thousands of years due to its spiritual and physical benefits, but it is only in more modern times that the mental health benefits have been proven in various studies.
In 2016, clinical yoga therapist Chrystal Assee opened Yogalogy with her twin sister Faye (also a yoga therapist and a social worker). The centre highlights the psychological benefits of yoga through individual and group sessions for all ages.
Instead of stretching and sweating it out like in Asana yoga, these classes are led by mental health professionals where the focus is dealing with issues like depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma and insomnia through quiet, guided meditation.
Beginning Oct.1, the centre will be offering a weekly teen meditation workshop (for eight weeks) geared to those between 12 and 17 to help with stress management and coping skills. The workshops will take place every Saturday until Nov. 19 from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. in English and in French at 3 p.m.
