Workshops about mental health

For a seventh year, the Douglas Mental University Institute is hosting a Mini-Psych School, which is a series of educational workshops about mental health issues. Here is a list of the talks being held this year: 

“It’s Crazy!” — Overthrowing Stigma in Mental Health. On October 9m 2012, Janina Komaroff, a research assistant at the Douglas Institute, will look at the most common prejudices in mental health. 

Can I go Back There? – Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder 101. On October 16, 2012, Camillo Zacchia, PhD and psychologist, will help participants understand how we react to different traumatic events. Learn how to distinguish between a normal reaction to trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Can Psychosis be Prevented? October 23, 2012, identify and understand the nature of psychosis with Ridha Joober, MD, PhD. Learn about the importance of early detection.

Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease – An Impossible Dream. On October 3, 2012, John Breitner MD, MPH and Research Scientist will explain the “normal aging” process and how to help protect the aging brain.

Teenage Angst or Full-Blown Depression? From Evolution to Intervention. On November 6, 2012, Johanne Renaud will demystify adolescent physiological development and talk about the warning signs of teenage depression. Adolescence is a complicated time for teens and parents, and it can seem impossible to decode certain emotions.

The workshops take place on Tuesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Douglas Institute, 6875 Lasalle Blvd. Classes will be held in English. The cost for the five courses is $75 for adults and $65 for students and seniors.
