When Sharp Dance Studio opened in 2017, the idea was to create a family atmosphere where students of all ages could learn to move their bodies and develop self confidence. Two years later, the studio owners say they have accomplished that, and more.
Located on Sherbrooke St. W. in N.D.G., it offers classes to children 5 and up as well as classes for teens and adults. Kids can choose from a variety of dance classes during their fall session, including break-dance, hip hop, dancehall, jazz, and contemporary. There are also dance fitness classes for adults.
Geto Présumé and Jessica Chau are co-owners of the studio. They say that the main goal is to teach students how to move their bodies, get out of their comfort zone, and to have fun. “It’s a beautiful art, and we want people to enjoy that,” Présumé says. He adds that they encourage positive vibes and a welcoming atmosphere. “We love to work with everybody. There’s no experience needed.”
With kid-friendly and clean versions of songs for younger students, the instructors try to erase stigmas around certain kinds of dances by focusing on athleticism and self-expression.
Présumé has more than 17 years experience teaching dance and as a backup dancer for various artists and celebrities. He and Chau teamed up to launch the studio through their mutual love of dance. The studio has been at its current location on Sherbrooke St. W. near Grey Ave. since last September.
The fall session runs from Sept. 9 to Dec. 16. Students can pick from several different packages depending on the type of dance they want to try and number of classes they want to attend. Hour-long classes are offered either once or twice a week. Prices range between $196 to $392 per session. Dance fitness classes for adults come in packages of six or 10 classes and cost $72 for six classes and $100 for 10.
