Social skills program for kids with autism

Coco’s Place, a preschool for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), will be introducing a special social skills program this summer run by a behaviour analyst.

It will be offered five days a week from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and is ideal for children who have already received applied behavioural analysis intervention, but still have social skills deficits. The program will offer a blend of social, play, and activities that target fine/gross motor skills and are specific to the need of each individual child.

“It’s like a ‘get ready for kindergarten’ social skills program,” says founder Sharon McCarry. “We have developed more than 20 modules, which are like chapters with lesson plans and exercises.”

Children in the program will work at their own pace, under the guidance of their ABA certified teacher, in groups no larger than four. Through interactive activities such as musical play and board games, children will put what they’ve been taught into practice, skills like introducing themselves, raising their hand, showing empathy and listening to other children. Children in the program will interact not only with peers in their group, but with children who are not on the spectrum.

This program lasts nine weeks, is broken into two week segments and costs $300 per week, excluding a $75 registration fee.

Low-income families may be eligible for financial support through the President’s Choice Children’s Charity, which could cover the full cost of the program. Registration ends June 5.
