skateboarders welcome on bike paths

Skateboarders can rejoice, as Montreal city councillors voted unanimously to pass a motion giving them access to the city’s bike paths.

Before May 25, skateboarding was considered illegal outside of designated skate parks and if you were caught doing it on one of the city’s bike paths you could be subject to a fine. However, this is no longer the case, as skateboarding is now recognized as an active form of transportation, like walking or cycling.

The motion to allow skateboarders onto city pathways was tabled by Project Montreal’s Verdun councilor Sterling Downey, who has been skateboarding himself for 20 years.

However, even though skateboarders are allowed on the city’s cycling lanes; they are still technically breaking the law if caught on city streets, which fall under the province’s jurisdiction. Skateboarders can be slapped with a $60 ticket if caught on the roads.
