Should You Take the Kids to: Bach Before Bedtime

In an effort to vary my kids’ musical diet (which is a little heavy on the Mix 96), I have tried turning on classical music in the car. The last few times, my older son has said, “Can you turn that off? It’s too sad.” So we return to “Waka Waka Wa hey, hey … .” You win some, you lose some.

This year we’ll try Bach Before Bedtime, a series of classical concerts for kids by Allegra Chamber Music. If the popularity of last year’s series is any indication, these concerts are showing kids that classical music can also rock. Bach Before Bedtime kicks off on Thursday, Oct. 28 at McGill University’s Pollack Hall, followed by four more performances in the coming months.

Each 45-minute concert has a theme, and short excerpts of each musical work are performed. Kids can sit on the floor, or on their parents’ laps, but won’t be on their bums the whole time. They are invited to join in at various points, by clapping, dancing, marching or singing in a round. “Mademoiselle Pin Drop” and “Monsieur Silence” will let them know when it’s their turn to shhhhhh.

Allegra’s artistic director Dorothy Fieldman Fraiberg started the concerts to help make children feel comfortable in a concert hall and introduce them to classical music in a fun way. After the show, the kids get to see the instruments up close and meet the musicians. Oh, and there might be some juice and snacks, too.
