Should You Take the Kids to: Babies

The documentary Babies, which opens today, looks fascinating. It’s a portrait of four babies from around the world (Namibia, Mongolia, the U.S. and Japan) from birth through their first year of life. There are no subtitles in the movie; reviews say that the footage speaks for itself.

You may be wondering if it’s a good learning experience for the kids. According to Common Sense Media, which reviews movies from a parent’s point of view, it will definitely be of interest to kids age 7 and up.

Here’s an excerpt from the review: “The film offers much food for thought about different ways of childrearing: Some babies are in more sterile environments, and others aren’t. Some babies have more access to books and toys, while others make do with plastic bottles and baby goats. On one hand, it shows that babies thrive and find glee in all sorts of situations, but on the other, it makes us think about unfamiliar parenting styles … .”
