Montreal Families

Run with firefighters for a good cause

The city of Laval hopes to get kids and adults of all fitness levels walking and running for a good cause at two annual fundraising races to help burn victims.

At the Grande Fête des pompiers, families can register for the five-kilometre Course Flamme on June 1 at the Centre de la nature de Laval and the Course des Pompiers on June 3. The latter offers a choice of five routes between two and 42 kilometres.

In addition to the races, the June 1-3 Grande Fête des pompiers also includes a street festival at Centropolis where visitors can meet firefighters, learn about fire safety, enjoy interactive activities, and watch a fire truck parade.

Since the first race in 2012, the event has grown from fewer than 300 participants to more than 4,000, and longer circuits were added to the original two- and five-kilometre ones.

Proceeds from the event are donated to the Fondation des pompiers du Québec pour les grands brûlés (FPQGB), the only organization in Quebec that raises funds to care and help the severely burned.

Every year, Quebec’s two centres for burn victims treat approximately 300 people from around the province. Last year, the race raised $28,500 to help support burn victims, funding research and rehabilitation programs, the purchase of specialized equipment, a summer camp for children, emergency funds and direct assistance for burn victims and their families.
