Prestigious ballet school holding auditions in Montreal
Young aspiring dancers will have to be on their toes this fall and winter as the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Professional Division (RWB School) begins its search for new talent.
The school encourages everyone with a “dream big” passion for dancing professionally to attend its in-person or virtual audition or submit an online video application. As part of their annual search, Montreal is one of 15 stops across the country where aspiring performers can display their abilities and learn more about the program and its campus in Winnipeg.
How to audition
Students must be in Grade 6 (or higher) as of September 2023 to audition. During the registration process, dancers will be asked about their current dance studio, years of ballet or dance training, and ballet or dance exams they have taken. (No previous training is required for students aged 12 and under)
Ballet dancers can register for the in-person Montreal audition taking place on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at Collège Sainte-Anne in Lachine. Those unable to take part on this date can attend a virtual audition. For more information and to register, click here or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Auditions consist of barre work, centre work, travelling enchaînements, and stretching. Auditions accommodate both French and English language participants and are interactive, giving students the feel for regular classes. Question-and-answer sessions are also held for students and parents to ensure the audition and acceptance processes are interactive, informative, and clear.
If neither in-person or virtual auditions are possible, dancers can also send in a video application by the May 1, 2023 deadline.
The school features world-class and full-time professional division programs, starting with its Seven-level Ballet Academic Program for children in Grades 6 and up, a two-year post-secondary training program for advanced-level dancers, and a teacher-training program.
After completing the preliminary audition process this fall or winter, students recognized as having potential for professional training will be invited to travel to Winnipeg to attend the school’s summer session in July 2023. After this period, some students will be invited to take part in the regular session, which runs from September 2023 to June 2024.
Dancers attending the school will board in the new state-of-the-art living centre that opened in January 2022. Connected to the studios, the five-level contemporary building in the heart of historic downtown Winnipeg includes dance and fitness studios, classrooms, recreation and relaxation spaces, an outdoor green space, an expanded food service program, and a bright communal dining hall.
“Today’s best practices for child safety and child development were the driving forces in the design exercise of the student living centre, which I know will reassure families making the sometimes-difficult decision to send their children away from home,” said RWB School Director Stéphane Léonard. “It is a spectacular place where young people from around the world will develop their artistry and their characters, cultivate lifetime friendships and experience the proximity to the RWB Company.”
