A new mother has a million and one things to think of after her baby is born. A Montreal-based organization has created a project to alleviate at least one worry for new mothers – where to breastfeed during a day out.

Breastfeeding support group Nourri-Source Montreal has compiled a list of breastfeeding-friendly businesses and establishments it calls Route du lait. From cafés and boutiques to flower shops and veterinarian offices, the idea is to help new mothers feel comfortable feeding their babies in public. In order to be a part of the network, the store or restaurant must provide a welcoming space or room with a chair where mothers can breastfeed without being obliged to purchase anything.

“A lot of moms are afraid to go out and breastfeed in public because they feel like they will be judged,” said project manager Geneviève Coulombe. She says the project aims to combat the negativity surrounding public breastfeeding. By putting together this network of establishments, they hope to create welcoming environments where mothers can feel at ease when they feed their child. According to Coulombe, many mothers are not aware that the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms protects their right to breastfeed in public.

The network includes more than 200 businesses in N.D.G., Verdun, Plateau Mont-Royal and the West Island.
