Sun Youth’s annual Avi Morrow New Bicycle Distribution Program is now accepting nominations for this year’s giveaway. Each year, an average of 100 bicycles are distributed through the program to children “whose actions have positively influenced their community or have shown exceptional courage in difficult situations.”
Nominate a child
The program is for children between ages 3 and 17 years from the Greater Montreal area. The deadline for submitting a name is March 15, 2021, and no applications will considered after that date. Nominate a child by clicking here.
The children chosen receive a bicycle, lock, and helmet.

An anonymous benefactor
The program for deserving children started in 1984, when a prominent Montreal businessman partnered with Sun Youth to distribute the new bicycles as a way to celebrate his birthday, while giving back to the community. He remained anonymous for 35 years, and was known simply as Mr. Bike Man, or the Bikeman. After his passing in 2019 at the age of 93, the generous donor was revealed to be Avrum (Avi) Morrow, who in 1948 founded Avmor, a manufacturer of cleaning products.
Before his death, Morrow made arrangements for the Annual Bike Giveaway to continue through future years.
In the last 15 years, the program has given an average of 100 bikes a year, and about 50 bikes per year were handed out during first 22 years. In total Sun Youth estimates they have given approximately 2,600 bikes over the program’s 37 years.
Donate to the program
While donations of bicycles from the public have been welcome in the past, to limit contact during the pandemic, it won’t be possible this year. However, people can make a monetary donation that will help Sun Youth purchase new bikes.
Donations can be made by visiting sunyouthorg.com/make-a-donation/
Once there, click on the “Donate Now” button, choose the “Donation in Support of an Event” option, then write “Bike Distribution” in the open field.
