The Segal Centre Studio is offering new after-school musical theatre courses for kids in the West Island. The Rising Stars and Shining Lights are beginner and intermediate level courses for students in Grade 2 and 3, and 4 to 6.
The programs will introduce children to the world of musical theatre with song, dance, and acting. Classes go beyond theatre skills says Liana Wiener, Director of the Academy. “Our real goal is to develop many life skills like confidence, self-esteem, and empathy.”
The Rising Stars program is an introduction to theatre. During the first sessions, the instructor will focus on basic acting techniques and self-awareness through puppetry, song, and improvisational games. During the second session, the students will build upon what they have learned to create a storyline with puppets and music. For their final performance, students will leave the puppets behind and play the characters themselves.
The Shining Lights program is an intermediate class for older kids of all skill levels, whether they have acted before or not. Students will study musical theatre as well as core concepts of acting like characterization, movement, body language, and voice projection. Classes focus on building interpersonal skills through teamwork and collaboration while also helping students develop the confidence necessary to perform on the big stage. There is an end-of-year performance on the Segal Centre’s professional stage.
The Rising Stars class takes place Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Oct. 23 until sometime in June. For Shining Lights, classes will be held Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and run from Oct. 25 to sometime in June. Both classes take place at the Hebrew Foundation School in D.D.O.
