It’s a familiar problem for parents: Kara Kennedy’s daughter wore a pair of tennis shoes only three times before she outgrew them. “I didn’t want to have to shell out another $75 for another pair,” she said. Her cousin Raegan Kennedy was experiencing similar troubles with her own growing kids.

After searching for a smarter way to manage the inflow and outflow of their kids’ clothes, Kara and Raegan realized their options were either second-hand shops or online peer-to-peer shopping. “With two young families, we didn’t feel like we had time to go to second-hand shops,” Raegan says. They didn’t find the online alternative convenient either. “You can buy second-hand kids’ clothes on Kijiji and Facebook but these are not one-stop-shops,” Kara says. “They require time for coordination of pick-up and drop-off, and you never know what you are going to get.”

Figuring other parents would appreciate an easy way to shop and recoup money from kids’ merchandise, the duo launched Little White Sneakers, a kids’ high-end clothing resale website. The website offers parents a sustainable solution to buying and selling practically new kids’ clothes.

They were both on maternity leave from their corporate jobs when they discussed starting the business; Raegan was a corporate lawyer at Torys and Kara was a marketing director at TELUS. “We were craving a new challenge and a little more flexibility,” Raegan said.

Kara says they only purchase high-quality brands as they are more durable and can withstand more wear and tear. “We have a very strict protocol with clothes and will only sell items that look practically new,” she said.

The website has approximately 1,000 pieces of clothing for babies, girls and boys, including brands such as Mexx, Nordstrom, Gap, Ralph Lauren, Zara, Gymboree and Burberry. Some examples include $20 shirts for $6 and a $90 snowsuit is listed at $35.

Little White Sneakers currently only picks up clothes in Toronto, but they hope to expand to other areas of Ontario and Quebec in the future. Even if they can’t sell their clothes on the site yet, parents in Montreal can buy items; there is free shipping on orders over $75.
