Parents in Laval have a new option for tutoring with the opening of an Oxford Learning Centre in the Chomedey area.  Founded in 1984, the Ontario-based organization aims to instill autonomous and efficient learning habits in students from pre-school to university for subjects like math, English, French, science and history.

Laval franchise owner Irene Brintalos says students first go through a ‘Dynamic Assessment’ to analyze how the child learns and where he or she needs help. A specially-tailored program is then created to fit the student’s individual needs in order to be up-to-date with the academic curriculum.

Brintalos says the organization’s method is based on cognitive learning, which focuses on a child’s ability to process and retain information. Educators give students tools to help them study more independently. For example, if a student is unsure of a word’s meaning, educators show them how to look it up in a dictionary instead of giving them the answer. The centre operates on the idea that autonomous learning creates important skills that translate into other aspects of students’ academic and personal lives.

There will be an open house on Saturday, April 29 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for parents to ask questions and explore the space. The address is 250-3310 100 Ave. in Chomedey-Laval.
