New learning centre opens in N.D.G.
For more than 40 years, Explorations Day Camp has offered activities taught by educators in the fields of math, fine arts, science, music, technology and more. At the end of the summer, all the equipment used would be stored away until the following year. Until now, that is.
James Feith, executive director of Explorations, came up with the idea to create a learning lab where all the equipment and materials from camp could be used throughout the year by kids who wanted to work on various projects. Recently opened in N.D.G., the lab offers weekend workshops in film & photography, robotics, and electronics & engineering. There is also a slew of material kids can use for individual projects in sewing, cooking, fashion design and more. The lab houses 3D Printers, LEGO robotics, electronic kits, film and photography equipment, art supplies and woodworking tools.
Workshops for kids who want to challenge themselves
For example, the Creator Lab workshop offers kids ages 5-12 a chance to explore sculpting, woodworking, painting or animation, or try their hand at building robots and coding video games. Educators are available to guide and lend a helping hand.
In another workshop geared those in Grades 4-6, kids can focus on 3D modelling and printing. Using a variety of tools, kids design solutions in 3D, print them using the most appropriate material, and add final touches with model paint.
Feith says the goal is to create a home for kids who are eager to challenge themselves and want to meet others who share their passion.
The lab offers workshops on weekends and is open on from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is also open on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (for the most part, used by kids who are being home-schooled but it is open to everyone). In mid-November, after-school and Ped Day programs will be available.
The cost for a workshop or for kids to use the lab’s equipment, software and materials to create their own projects is $30 for an hour and a half.
The Explorations Learning Lab is at 6591 Somerled Ave.
