New C.I.T. program launched for teens

Youth Stars Foundation is offering an eight-week course that teaches kids about leadership, conflict resolution, professionalism and financial literacy

New C.I.T. program launched for teens

Youth Stars Foundation is offering a free online Counsellor-in-Training program starting Dec. 1 (but teens may be able to register after that date and do make up sessions).

The eight-week course is tailored to teens between the ages of 13 and 17, and is designed to be engaging and hands on, while also giving teens who are feeling isolated a chance to connect with their peers.

“They will actively participate and be involved in each sessions,” said Andrea Shak, program coordinator at Youth Stars Foundation. “There will also be time for socializing and getting to know each other.”

Course completion opens up summer camp job opportunities

Shak says that their program is unique in that it aims to give participants not just skills that can be used in a camp setting, but throughout life: financial literacy, leadership, conflict resolution, and professionalism are all part of the program.

Participants who complete the eight weeks receive a C.I.T. certificate and the possibility of gaining a summer camp job with Youth Stars. While the program offered is not accredited with L’Association des camps du Québec (ACQ)and is geared towards Youth Stars’ own camps — completion of the course is a positive supplement to any teen’s CV.

Youth Stars offers programs that will help kids later in life. For example, it offers a March break and summer camp, where the kids play sports, learn to code and about financial literacy, and do arts and science-based activities. It also has the Anti-Bullying Tour, where kids in school are taught how to identify and help a victim of bullying, and how to encourage the bully to change his or her habits and attitudes. There is also a Black History Tour, which is about breaking stereotypes and helping the public learn about the contributions blacks have made to society outside of the sports and entertainment fields. All of its programs, except for the camps, are free.

The C.I.T. program for teens takes place over Zoom on Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.. Should a participant miss a session or register late, make-up classes will be available online.
