Model train exhibition rolls into Dorval

All aboard! Montreal’s Model Train Exposition will be held at a new location this year. Formerly held in the Sun Youth building, it will now take place at the Dorval Arena to accommodate more people. The event will also be wheelchair-accessible and have more parking facilities.

Held in conjunction with Sun Youth Organization, the exhibition will be held over two days and will showcase more than 40 train and railway tracks, as well as remote-controlled cars and boats that children can try out. There will be approximately 30 vendors with collectibles and train sets. Held since 1998, the event draws about 2,000 people.

Kids will be able to assemble tracks and tinker with elevated model railways, where they can play with large wooden trains complete with mountains, buildings and scenery. There will also be electronic sets that kids can operate themselves.

History buffs can enjoy model trains on display from the 1920s onward, offering parents and kids a look into the past. “It’s fun for kids to see what their grandfathers or great-grandfathers would have played with when they were young,” says Ivan Dow, the exposition coordinator.

Other displays include a Harry Potter model railway, including a replica of Hogwarts castle, a clockwork railway that kids can wind up, road-racing sets and model boats. The exposition is not limited to trains, and clubs from around the city will be represented, including the boat club, miniature club, tank club, and multiple train clubs.

There will be trains for sale, from collectibles to the latest models, as well as videos, kits, and books.

The exposition will take place May 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1450 Dawson Ave, in Dorval. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for children, and $30 for groups of up to 10 people. According to the event’s coordinators, the quietest time to visit the exposition is typically Sunday morning.
