Local artist creates colouring book

At a time when so many are looking to de-stress and connect with nature, a new colouring book from West Island artist Lisa Kimberly Glickman offers the opportunity for both.

Whimsical Birds to Colour – Nos Beaux Oiseaux: dessins à colorier is a bilingual, educational colouring book that the whole family can colour, read, and enjoy. The book showcases intricate drawings of 25 of the artist’s favourite birds with accompanying facts. Each text page also features mini-illustrations of woodland creatures, insects, and plants. A dragonfly, a shy field mouse, and an acorn branch are just some that you’ll discover as you colour your way through the pages.

Glickman calls the book a “child of the pandemic” and started creating its illustrations and text while quarantining for two weeks during a December 2020 visit to Nova Scotia. She is donating $10 from each book sale to Bird Protection Quebec, a volunteer-run registered Canadian charity established in 1917 that aims to protect birds and their habitats in Quebec. So far $500 has been donated to the charity with more to come.  “I had this idea of a colouring book and I wanted it to be educational. And, I wanted to give something back,” she says.

Drawing 8-10 hours a day, the book took two months to complete, with Glickman receiving plenty of support and encouragement along the way. Some of the photographers from the Facebook group for Technoparc Oiseaux — an area of vital wetlands and forests in Saint-Laurent with a diverse bird population— granted permission to use their photos as reference for the drawings. Journalist/writer/producer Hubert Gendron collaborated on the French translations, revisions of the English text were edited by Howard Bokser, and fact-checking was done by Connie Morgenstern, the Education Director of Bird Protection Quebec.

Lively American goldfinches, fluffy black-capped chickadees, and amusing pileated woodpeckers are just some of the birds featured. Glickman says that she doesn’t have a particular favourite bird, and gets pleasure from all of them. “I love their antics, the way they fly, their sounds, and their intelligence,” she says.

The book is coil-bound, making it easy to lie flat for colouring, and pages can be removed once completed. The illustrations are printed on 80-pound matte paper, making it ideal for pencil crayons, markers or watercolours.

Glickman is currently working on another colouring book featuring waterbirds and hopes to have it available later this spring.
