La Fete du Cirque in Vaudreuil-Dorion

Circus events are taking over the city, including Montreal Complètement Cirque and Vaudreuil-Dorion’s La Fête du Cirque. The Vaudreuil event, which started July 2 and runs through July 11, hosts tons of circus and musical shows and family programming.

Kids will be happy to know that as of Thursday, July 8, the carnival is in town, hosted by Amusements Spectaculaires at Parc de la Cité des Jeunes, 400 St. Charles Ave. (view map). The carnival will be open from 4 p.m. to midnight on Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Even if you’ve never heard of Amusements Spectaculaires, you may have noticed one of their mobile carnivals set up in a suburban parking lot or an open field during the spring/summer months. The company has some different fairground setups, one of which was in Pierrefonds this weekend (see photos above).

Our kids had a super time at the Pierrefonds fair. Many of the rides are aimed at the two to five age group, like the fleet of mini helicopters that rise up off the ground and “fly” slowly in a circle, the classic carousel, the spinning teacups and the fun house with a maze and wacky mirrors. Another hit was the giant slide, where kids sit on gunny sacks and sail down an extra long track. There are also bigger rides, like the ferris wheel, the swinging pirate ship and a mini-roller coaster.

We ended up spending about 2.5 hours there, and the kids got to enjoy the same style of rides that they would at La Ronde, but with MUCH shorter lineups. Beware the games area, though. We ended up getting suckered in way too many times to win way too many cheap stuffed animals, one of which started falling apart before we got in the car.

Place du Cabotin
Also on the Fête du Cirque agenda is Place du Cabotin, which will host circus workshops, children’s activities and street entertainers from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Circus Shows for Families
Some of the family-oriented shows charge admission, while others are free. The ticketed events are Vague de Cirque, July 6 to 11, for age 2 and up; Arthur l’Aventurier on July 10 at 3:30 p.m. and Les Petites Tounes on July 11 at 11 a.m. For the free shows, check the schedule.

Have you been to La Fête du Cirque? What did you think?
