Kindergarten registration gets underway in January

We’re almost halfway through the school year, and Montreal-area school boards are gearing up for kindergarten and elementary school registration. Here are some details on how to register your student for the 2023-2024 school year at Montreal’s two English-language school boards.

The first step in getting ready for kindergarten is finding out which schools your child is zoned for by looking online. You can do this in a couple of ways: Search on the Lester B. Pearson School Board (LBPSB) website at busplanner.lbpsb.qc.ca/Eligibility or on the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) school finder at emsb.qc.ca/emsb/schools/search.

The online registration process for the EMSB 2023-2024 academic year will take place from January 30 to February 3, 2023, while sibling registration will take place a week earlier. Parents are asked to register at the EMSB elementary school nearest their residence offering the French program of their choice.

At the LBPSB, the registration period for K4-K5 and new students will run from the last week of January into February (check their website in January for the exact dates).

English Eligibility

To be eligible to attend a regular English-language school or a French immersion program students must meet certain criteria in accordance with the Charter of the French language adopted by the Government of Quebec. According to the Quebec government, a certificate of eligibility is generally issued to children:

◾ who have received the major part of their elementary or secondary school instruction in English in Canada;

◾ whose brother or sister did the major part of his or her elementary or secondary studies in English in Canada;

◾ whose father or mother did the major part of his or her elementary studies in English in Canada;

◾ whose father or mother attended school in Quebec after August 26, 1977, and could have been declared eligible for instruction in English at that time.

In the first two cases, the father or mother of the child must be a Canadian citizen. In the third case, the parent who studied in Canada must be a Canadian citizen.

These are the most common situations that allow a child to receive instruction in English. According to the Charter of the French language, all children of refugees must attend French school unless they qualify as a special exception. Parents will be asked to fill out forms which will allow the school to apply for the certificate of eligibility for English schooling.

More information on English eligibility can be found at Educaloi or on the EMSB website.
