Montreal Families

Kids Will Flip Over Gymnastics Camp

Gymnastics is one of the most beautiful sports to watch, combining breathtaking acrobatics and graceful movements to create a dynamic spectacle. In fact, the women’s all-round competition is one of the most watched events at the summer Olympics. It’s no wonder that many kids want to emulate the talented gymnasts they see on television.

For keen young Montrealers, there are several local gymnastics camps — plus a residential camp in Vermont — that offer both first-timers and serious athletes a place to develop their skills. Most of these camps offer gymnastics along with other sports, activities and outings.
Chantale Le Clerc, who works at Club de gymnastique Gadbois, says gymnastics is a terrific way for young people to strengthen most of their muscle groups and improve coordination and flexibility. So if your child is interested in tumbling, flipping and somersaulting through the summer, check out the following camps:

Overnight camp for gymnasts

Dunkley’s Gymnastics Camp is located in South Hero, Vermont. Participants range in age from 7-17 and come from Quebec, the U.S. and Europe.  Ruth Dunkley McGowan, who runs the camp with her family, says kids take part in other activities such as swimming, hiking and canoeing. She credits Dunkley’s family-style atmosphere for helping participants feel comfortable. “Because we only take 30 campers each session, we’re like a big family.” The camp accepts both novice and experienced gymnasts.

Older kids sleep in cabins, while younger participants stay in the main lodge. Coaches and university-level gymnasts provide 24-hour supervision. A day at Dunkley’s includes indoor and outdoor gymnastics classes at the camp’s lakefront location, video reviews and feedback about a gymnast’s workout and activities such as swimming, mountain biking, sailing, canoeing and crafting. The camp runs from June 22 to August 15. Cost is $600 for a one-week session and $1,030 for two weeks. For information, call (802) 899-3479 or visit www.gymcamp.homestead.com.
