Imaginary world comes to life at Verdun Puppet festival

Come and celebrate the end of summer with a puppet procession at the Festival Marionnettes Plein la rue in Verdun. Taking place on Friday evenings and Saturdays from August 26 to September 3, 2022, the 11th edition of the festival will treat young and old alike to a whimsical display of puppeteering.

Over one kilometre of Promenade Wellington will come alive with captivating small-scale puppets, marionettes, and larger-than-life creations that will entertain and delight.

“The puppet festival is the perfect activity for the whole family as it covers all sorts of puppet shows: from inhabited puppets, rod puppets, hand puppets to exhibitions…let yourself be surprised!” said Promenade Wellington Comunity Manager Claire Groulx-Robert. “We promise a variety of creations that will amaze all ages.”

The free performances will be presented by more than 20 companies at venues and parks adjacent to the borough’s lively Promenade Wellington. Highlights of the festival include shows aimed at the youngest spectators and hands-on creative workshops that delve into the world of puppeteering.

Some of the offerings

A favourite from the 2019 edition, Le Jardin du Théâtre des Petites Âmes returns to give children from 1 to 6 years old the opportunity to manipulate, animate, and explore puppets in its playful sensory garden. Saturday September 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., beside the Presbytery of the Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs Church.

The artists of Imagicario will also be present this year for a very special workshop: The Inhabited Puppet, from concept to life, which will allow festival-goers to discover the secrets of design, construction, and manipulation. Saturday August 27 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. (60 minute duration), beside the Presbytery of the Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs Church.

And youngsters can enjoy the entertainment of La petite valise Théâtre as it presents the musical flavour of its puppet show Les Trottinotes for 2- to 5-year-olds. Saturday, August 27 at 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 5 p.m. (40 minute duration), at Parc des Madelinots.

While the majority of the presentation are free, a special closing show will take place on Saturday, September 10 at Quai 5160 at a cost of $7. Tickets are available and can be purchased HERE.
