A new initiative at the Lester B. Pearson High School brings teens together to spread messages of positivity. The Random Acts of Kindness Squad was inspired by messages given by the school’s childcare worker Teresa Paci at the end of daily intercom messages, said Vice Principal Lisa Triestino.“She would always end with inspirational quotes and tell children to be kind to each other,” she said.
The committee was created in November 2016 to spread kindness and love around the school and in the community. The squad started off with simple actions, like leaving notes on desks with kind messages and inspirational quotes.
The group’s biggest venture yet was the designing and building of a Kindness Bench (pictured above) in collaboration with LINKS High School, an alternative high school for students with learning difficulties. The bench was designed to encourage students to sit together and be nice to each other.
The Random Act of Kindness Squad and LINKS students unveiled the bench on National Pink Shirt Day (at right), a day against bullying. Triestino says students are already making plans for improving and expanding the program this fall. “Kids have been brainstorming. They want to make the school more inspirational.”
