We stumbled on Somerled Park during an aborted mission to Kidnasium in N.D.G. The play centre had closed by the time we got there, so we had two disappointed kids, and two non-N.D.G. parents who didn’t know what to do next on a drizzly spring day.

Driving away, we noticed this park about two blocks away from Kidnasium. It stands out because it has an old-style white “clubhouse” (it’s kept locked, but there’s a bathroom inside) and garden area, but also has modern playground equipment that attracts a range of kids, from babies up to tweens. The older kids’ section has high climbing walls and other unusual climbing features, plus a steep and fast slide. Somerled also has one of the best swings your kids have ever seen – it’s actually a comfy swinging chair.

The toddler area is set on sand, and has a traditional climbing structure, but also a pirate ship with steering wheel and a spinning cup for kids to sit in. This area gets some nice shade from the clubhouse. Next to the playground area is a large, grassy space for kicking a ball around. There are several tennis courts in the park, so parents who play may be able to get a game in while spouses watch the kids at the park.

On a second trip to Somerled Park, we picked up food and ate at one of the shaded tables – there are a couple of adult-size tables and a children’s picnic table, too. The park is within walking distance of Monkland Ave., where there’s a grocery store and various cafés (Second Cup, Starbucks), bakeries (Première Moisson, Pain Doré) and restaurants.
