Guided Tour: Irma LeVasseur Park

Irma LeVasseur Park
Address: near 999 McEachran St., Outremont
Bathrooms: In the Centre Intergenerationnel community centre, at 999 McEachran St.

It’s a little park with big ideas. Outremont’s Irma LeVasseur Park, which opened in May 2010, has a playground and exercise equipment for adults. Located right next to the Centre Intergenerationnel community centre at 999 McEachran St., the park is fenced and has play equipment best suited for the toddler crowd, including climbing ropes, slides and swings. There are also picnic tables that have checkerboards set in the tabletops.

Behind the play area are three pieces of adult exercise equipment: a Stairmaster-like apparatus (works with pressure cylinder-type things, not electricity), three steps (sort of like what you’d see in a step aerobics class), and a “tai chi” piece of equipment for the arms/shoulders.

Working out while the kids play?

So, in theory, you could get in a workout while your children play in the park. In theory. Keep in mind that the park is small, so the play structure might not keep kids busy for long, and the equipment is not what you’d find at the gym. Also, have you ever noticed that kids tend to want your attention more when they see that you’re busy with something else? It’s a great concept, but don’t give up your gym membership yet.

When the park was inaugurated, it was announced that four other Outremont parks would be improved between 2010/11: Dunlop, Querbes, de l’Epée, and the wading pool at John F. Kennedy Park will be re-done.

Classic Car show tomorrow
Speaking of Outremont, the Déjeuner Sur l’Herbe classic/vintage car show will be held tomorrow, June 6, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Outremont Park, at the corner of Outremont and St. Viateur Sts.
