Social and active play is the name of the game for the newly announced Playdium entertainment complex, set to open in Brossard in late 2020.
Playdium will offer both video games like Super Mario Brothers, as well as group games like bowling and mini-golf. There will also be a virtual reality arena, a free-roaming, interactive experience for up to six players described on the website as a “combination of laser tag and dodge ball.”
Playdium is a product of Cineplex entertainment, which owns and operates theatres across Canada. A number of its theatres have games and dining options but Playdium is a stand-alone family amusement centre. Cineplex opened the first two entertainment franchise locations in Brampton and Whitby Ontario in 2019.
“What’s fascinating about Playdium is it’s really about active play. So although we have 80 to 100 games…we also have attractions, and attractions are really key because they’re social and work for all ages,” says Christina Kuypers, vice president of operations & guest experience at Playdium and The Rec Room. Some of the activities are bowling, a rope course, virtual reality and more.
The experience is geared towards kids aged 11 to 17; however, Kuypers notes that many adults prefer Playdium to the traditional bar and club scene. “One of the reasons why you see an older demographic come in on Friday and Saturday nights is that they’re looking for a social experience.”
Playdium will serve food and alcohol, with options for fast-casual dining and more leisurely, “sit-down” dining. It is recommended that children under 11 be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Kuyers explains that DIX30 in Brossard was chosen as the chain’s first Quebec location because of its commercial activity, population density and accessibility, as well as the development’s appeal to teens and families.
“We’re really excited about the development there. We knew that there’s a ton of potential in and around that region but we really like the commercial activity in that space,” she says.
There is no set opening date for the Brossard Playdium, but you can keep up to date on the latest developments online at playdium.com.
