Montreal Families

Friendly circus giants taking to Montreal streets

A trio of giants are descending on Montreal this July, bringing with them all the excitement and artistry of three of Quebec’s most distinguished circus companies — Cirque Éloize, Les 7 Doigts, and Machine de Cirque.

From July 7 to 17, 2022, the 52-foot-high steel giants will animate three Montreal public spaces — Place Émilie-Gamelin, on the Esplanade PVM at Place Ville Marie, and at Vinet Park north of the Atwater market.

Part of Montreal Complètement Cirque

Built by Scène Éthique, the company behind such notable creations as Le cycle du Ring at the Metropolitan Opera and Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza, Luzia, and Kurios production, the 3GIANTS are presented as part of the 13th edition of Montreal Complètement Cirque — the annual festival dedicated to circus arts.

Over the course of the festival’s 11 days, the site of each giant will showcase free daily performances at 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., for a total of approximately sixty free outdoor performances.

A different show at each venue

Three shows will be presented at each site by the three performers.

At Jardins Gamelin in Quartier des spectacles, there will be performances by Cirque Éloize. The 7 Doigts giants will be at Esplanade PVM at Place Ville Marie. Finally, the Machine de Cirque giant will be at Vinet Park.

Quebec culture will be showcased featuring the works of Rufus Wainwright, Gilles Vigneault, Leonard Cohen, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Oscar Peterson, and others.

About the festival

“Since 2010, Montréal Complètement Cirque has been constantly revisiting itself to offer circus art lovers the craziest and most colourful venues,” said Caroline Proulx, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for the Lanaudière and Bas-Saint-Laurent regions. “This year, the festival will surprise us with the arrival of the 3Giants, gigantic steel structures which will present artists’ numbers more breathtaking than one another, thus contributing to the radiance of the city of Montreal.”

Since 2010, the festival has featured a circus program spread across the city. Spearheaded by TOHU, along with the support of Cirque Éloize, Les 7 doigts, Cirque du Soleil, the National Circus School, and En Piste, the festival is the culmination of their collective expertise, resources, and talent.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante is thrilled to see cultural and economic life returning after a difficult two years for area merchants and businesses. “I’m really happy to see these 3Giants take their place at the heart of the City of Montreal. It is an emblematic and unifying event for our City, which every year sees thousands of citizens discover the richness and creativity of the circus that makes Montreal an international capital of arts and circus.”
