Free workshops for kids at Apple stores

Young filmmakers, musicians, artists and photographers can get free help to learn the technical tools of their craft during free, weekly drop-in workshops at Montreal-area Apple stores.

Apple’s Kids Hour workshops are for children aged 8 to 12. Topics vary but include making music with GarageBand, making movies with iPad, and drawing with Apple Pencil.

Trainer George Lazaris, who facilitates the Pointe-Claire sessions, said kids are welcome to join adult-oriented classes too, as long as they are accompanied by their parents. These sessions include sketch walks using Apple Pencil, photo walks with iPhone, editing video on the Mac, and sharing your ideas with Keynote.

The stores also offer regular Studio Hours for those who like to work on their own projects. “Think of it like study hall,” Lazaris said. “You come with your own work, and if you have questions, a teacher is there to help you.”

Apple stores offer programs for educators as well, with weekly Teacher Tuesday sessions about how to use products in the classroom, and even an option for field trips that can be customized to support class projects.

All programs, including field trips, are offered at no cost, but participants must register in advance. Participants can bring their own equipment, however it is also available to borrow in most cases.
