Montreal Families

Free ‘baby box’ offered to new parents

Expectant parents and those with infants under three months old can sign up for a free portable bassinet along with samples and coupons for baby items through Baby Box Quebec.

Inspired by a 75-year-old Finnish tradition, the Baby Box provides families with new-baby essentials packaged in a cardboard bassinet. The bassinet comes with a firm mattress, waterproof cover and cotton fitted sheet, as well as other goodies for mom and baby.

According to program coordinator Hali Ludwick, the box is useful for new parents but it is also a powerful educational tool. To receive the boxes, parents must first watch an informational video and complete an online “Baby Box University” quiz.

The website also includes other resources to help educate parents about topics such as pregnancy, safe sleep, breastfeeding, maternal mental health, and parenthood, as well as other topics related to baby and maternal health and scientifically based activities for early child development.

“Our main goal is to educate parents on safe sleep to try to reduce SIDS,” said Ludwick. “We want to educate parents to help reduce infant mortality. We want to reach as many new and expecting moms as possible, so that’s why we offer the boxes for free.”

Ludwick said the boxes will fit most babies up to five or six months old, and after they outgrow it, the box can be used as a keepsake box or for storage. “I think it’s fantastic. I wish I had this when I had my kids,” she said.

The boxes are available by reservation at “pop-up” events with partner stores and service providers around Montreal. Upcoming events include:
