Free app aims to help kids cope with cancer

The West Island Cancer Wellness Centre (WICWC) has launched a free app to help families and children deal with cancer.

A Little App About Cancer is a digital version of the 40-page workbook the WICWC released in 2014. The app and workbook feature tons of creative exercises for elementary-aged children to work through their feelings about cancer.

Beginning with a few introductory pages about the child, the app and workbook ask basic questions like, “What is cancer to you?” and, “How do you feel about cancer?” before getting into more complex activities that encourage them to express deeper feelings.

If the child is feeling angry, sad or confused, the exercises provide them with an outlet for their emotions by asking them to draw, match words, etc.

Kids can choose from a variety of different colours to draw and write with, and they can also save pages and send them to family members or friends.

The workbook was created by McGill University student Kasia Whitelaw, whose mother was diagnosed with cancer when Kasia was 6 years old. The workbook has been distributed to 6,000 children in the Montreal area.

The workbook is also free but a $5 shipping fee will apply if you order it online. There is no charge if you pick it up at the WICWC centre, which is located in Kirkland at 115 Rue du Barry.
