Urban dwellers have a number of opportunities to learn how to camp this summer with tips from the experts and without having to invest in all the equipment.
Parks Canada launched a Learn-to-Camp program in 2011 to educate families about the ins and outs of camping. From June 26 to Aug. 15, free group workshops geared to kids 8 and up will focus on how to pitch a tent, start a fire, cook outdoors, and more. This activity is popular for day camps, youth groups, community organizations and large family groups.
There are also three dates where families can stay overnight with Parks Canada specialists at the Raceway Bank, a stone’s throw from Old Montreal. Families can choose the Privilege or Signature Experience.
The Privilege Experience, offered July 6 and Aug. 3, will allow 50 participants to learn the basics of camping, toast marshmallows, get a spray-on tattoo, laze around in a hammock and stay overnight in a tent.
The Signature Experience, offered on Aug. 17, will be capped at 200 participants and have a festival vibe with live music and the same activities as the privilege experience.
These overnight stays cost $88 per four-person tent (add $22 for each extra person).
