Montreal Families

Event showcases activities for kids with special needs

A new event aims to help people with special needs and their families discover new recreational resources in and around Montreal.

The Fun for All Fair will be held on Saturday, April 14 and will have more than 30 local organizations that offer services for people with special needs.

According to coordinator Linda Mahler, the free event is designed to give parents and kids a chance to explore various activities, including martial arts, cycling, cheerleading, dance, theatre, science, art and more.

Mahler noted that in addition to being fun, recreational activities also help develop muscle tone, coordination, social skills and other essential skills that don’t always come easily for people with special needs.  “These children are being brought to occupational therapists and psychologists, which is work for them.” Mahler said. “It’s so important for parents to understand that play, leisure and recreation is also part of learning.”

Participating organizations will host activities or have play stations at the event to showcase their services and give families a chance to try something interactive.

The fair is presented by Inspirations News, a publication of the English Montreal School Board. It will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m at the St. Laurent Adult Centre, 950 Fraser St., in St. Laurent. It is wheelchair accessible and parking is free.
