Montreal Families

Discover Montreal museums for FREE

On May 27, families can visit a variety of museums for free on Montreal Museum Day. In addition to the regular exhibitions, many museums will be organizing special activities.

According to spokesperson Véronique Gosselin, the event is a great opportunity to explore new places and visit areas of Montreal people may be less familiar with.

“We know about the most popular museums but it’s also a great day to visit some new ones,” she said. “All the museums in the west side of the island, for example, are really fun and we don’t always think to go visit them.”

Free courtesy shuttles provided by the STM will run on three colour-coded circuits departing from Angrignon Station to bring visitors to museums located outside of the downtown core.

The Green Circuit will ferry passengers to Maison St. Gabriel where there will be story-tellers in period (New France) costumes and artisans making crafts.

Meanwhile, the Blue Circuit will stop at the Stewart Hall Gallery, the Museum of History and Heritage Dorval,  the Musée de Lachine Pavillon de l’Entrepôt, the Sir-George-Étienne-Cartier National Historic Site and the Musée de Lachine Pavillon.

“These are all fun museums that families will enjoy, plus the shuttle goes by the St. Lawrence river and the Lachine Canal, so it’s a nice ride on a sunny Sunday,” Gosselin said.

A third shuttle route, the Yellow Circuit, will depart from the Jean-Drapeau Metro station and bring families to the Stewart Museum and the Biosphère on Île Ste. Hélène. “It’s a nice short trip to get a break from the city,” Gosselin said.

Downtown, families can look for activities at the Promenade des artistes downtown near the Place-des-arts Metro, from which families can easily take public transportation to visit more central museums like the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the McCord Museum.
