Families who love to skate and snowshoe have new trails to explore at Countryside Adventures in Moose Creek, Ont, about an a hour and a half from Montreal.
After a successful first year, Countryside Adventures has undergone a complete renovation and is introducing new activities. The main area has been revamped and expanded to include a bonfire and petting zoo, new benches have been added along the skating trails and a barrier has been added to the hill to make it safer for young ones. In addition, there is a new three-kilometre snowshoeing and cross-country trail, which features a scenic path to a bridge over a creek.
The three-kilometre skateway winds through a private forest, far from highway noise and the bustle of the city. Beginner skaters and little ones can opt for a smaller circuit, thanks to a shortcut at the halfway mark, or opt for tobogganing or snowshoeing on the adjacent trails.
According to owner Nicholas Séguin, who opened the trail last January, the beauty and peace of the woods is a welcome respite from the stress of our often all-too-busy lives.
“It’s peaceful and quiet. You’ll hear the birds, and if you’re lucky you might see a deer,” Séguin said. “It’s just something completely different. You forget all the stress and you just relax.”
Skate and snowshoe rentals are available, along with balance aids for beginner skaters. Facilities include a heated changing room and bathrooms, as well as a food truck selling coffee, hot chocolate, poutine and other snacks.
The skate trail opens Dec. 23. Opening hours are Mon. and Wed. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thurs. from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fri. from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sat. from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sun. from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Headlamps are available for those who are skating after dark.
