Daycare teaches kids about empathy

It’s never too early to start helping others or to gain an awareness of the bigger world. At least, that’s the philosophy of the daycare Académie Prescolaire des Anges in Ahuntsic-Cartierville.

For every registered child, the daycare sponsors a needy child in a developing country through its Global Citizen program. The daycare carries the costs of the sponsorship, which is carried out through World Vision, and students are given the opportunity to send cards and letters to their personal ‘global friend.’

“The objectives of the program are two-fold,” explains Mirette Kamel, the academy’s director. “First, to let the kids realize that the world is much bigger than their immediate vicinity, and second, to let the kids realize that there are people in the world who are less fortunate than they are and that they have a role to play in helping them.”

During arts and crafts, the kids will do drawings and other projects to send to their “global friend.”

Kamel says they ask the parents to incorporate these sponsored kids in their families by hanging their photos on the fridge and talking about them at home.
