Break free from the city and reconnect with nature in the Laurentian town of Saint-Hippolyte. Approximately a 45-minute drive north of Montreal, you’ll find winding trails, an outdoor obstacle course, and spectacular views.
Whether you’re looking for a short jaunt on a nature trail or an adventurous, all-day endeavour, Centre de plein air Roger-Cabana is a fabulous place to enjoy the woods, water, and play areas of this family-friendly nature park.
Bring your walking shoes because 10 kilometres of trails are earmarked for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. There is an exercise course with permanent outdoor equipment for energizing breaks along the walk, and make sure to check out the nature art created out of wood and stone by local artists.
A highlight of the park is the ninja-style obstacle course located among the trees. Aimed at kids 4-15, the circuit is made up of 12 challenges that will test balance and agility. Cross the swinging wooden steps, scale the climbing wall, and careen down the awesome zipline. Once you’ve completed it all, it’s time to start over. On a recent visit, my kids and their friends took turns zipping along the cable for almost an hour before we headed out on a walk.
The trail system has loops of varying lengths and difficulties and is shared between hikers and cyclists. A hike up Mont Tyrol will reward you with terrific views of the surrounding mountains and nearby Achigan Lake. Download the trail map or check the large sign near the reception building to plan your route. You can also download the ONDAGO app and follow your movements on the trails in real time. Experienced mountain bikers can check out photos and details of the different routes on the Trailforks website at trailforks.com/region/centre-roger-cabana-13886.
