Day camps that are going virtual

Although day camps have been given the green light to open, many directors have decided to offer online programs instead of traditional, in-person camps this summer

Although more screen time is not an ideal way for kids to spend a large part of their summer, many parents need them to have some type of structured activity. There are a number of camps in and around Montreal that are offering a virtual option this year because of COVID-19, and are finding innovative ways to make the experience interactive and fun.

Below is an alphabetical list of virtual summer day camps – check back regularly as this article will be updated.

Camp@Home
905-640-2127
www.campathome.ca
Ages: 4-13
Description provided by camp:
“A camp experience that allows children and youth to make personal, genuine camp connections online. Because it’s hard to imagine what an online camp would look like, Camp at Home is providing families across Canada with a chance to test it out for FREE (June 29th – July 3rd).  Campers will be provided with a daily schedule with two hours of of engaging programming and social connection. Campers then navigate a map of their digital camp, deciding if they want to participate in interactive camp-wide activities, or small group, prerecorded skill-based sessions. Twice a day, campers break off into small, age-specific groups that function as their online cabins. These groups remain consistent all week long so that campers have the opportunity to meet new friends, build confidence, and develop meaningful relationships outside their usual circles – all under the supervision of an experienced counsellor. Through live-video streaming, counsellors are present to lead discussions in cabin check-ins, offer mentorship, and cheer on campers during activities.”

Camp offering activities that help students became game creators, creative problem solvers and artists

Description provided by camp:
Ever thought of creating your own game? Whether kids are interested in the art, coding or the story behind all games, there is something for everyone.  This two-week experience with specialized teachers will provide a premium experience.  Austin is from New Mexico and will lead campers through an adventure that will develop imagination and the ability to create stories by playing a character in dungeons and dragons.  This is a video, sound, graphic immersive experience and a highlight of the camp.  France & Peter, with over 30 years of combined experience teaching, will guide campers through coding to develop games using Scratch in our lower levels and Python and Twine for our experienced coders.  At the end, campers will be able to create their own computer games.  Alexandre, an amazing artist and illustrator from Paris, will teach kids how to draw and design their own images and characters, which will develop their imagination and creativity.  We focus on quality and so cap our group sizes at 10 or fewer students and have limited our offerings to the teachings of four exceptional staff members from around the world. The camp will run from July 6 to 31 and enrollment is limited. Half-days are $125.00/week and full-day bundles of two courses are $190. A portion of the fees will go to Canada Food Banks and we are giving two, free spots to campers living in a financially challenged environment.”

The Junior Intensive is a half-day camp for dancers aged 7 to 11, offered for two separate weeks in July. Instructors will guide the dancers through daily ballet classes, yoga or stretching sessions, as well as other dance styles to burn off some energy like hip-hop and musical theatre. The Advanced Intensive is a half-day camp held for two weeks in August, aimed at serious intermediate to advanced dancers ages 11 and up. Daily ballet classes will reinforce their training.  Workshops in specific techniques, variations and other styles such as contemporary dance will offer variety and creativity. A good way to work with high calibre teachers and perfect technique over the summer.

Having completed the final nine weeks of its season online this spring, with over 400 dancers ages 3 and up participating, Ballet Ouest has mastered the art of online dance training. At less than half the price of our usual in-studio summer camps and intensives, these virtual camps are an affordable way to experience the Ballet Ouest difference. French, English, Spanish, math and coding
Ages 6-17
Description provided by camp:
“Instead of holding a summer camp at our four centres this year, we will continue to offer online classes for math, English, French, Spanish and coding. We have two kinds of format: semi-private (1 tutor to 3 students) classes and group lectures (1 tutor to ~10 students). Our semi-private classes are very personalized and taught according to the students’ level. Students will have access to our online platform where they will practice their exercises while seeing the teacher virtually, who will explain concepts and answer any questions that they may have. Our group lectures are like crash courses where we cover the major topics covered in school. Our ratio is not as big as those in school and to make the learning experience more enjoyable, our classes are quite interactive, and students are very much involved. Students, on average, spend 1-2 hours in front of the screen per day, an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. Prices have been adjusted to reflect the tutor-student ratio and the number of hours. Please contact us about the prices.”

YM-YWHA Day Camps – Y CAMP AT HOME

Stefani Novick –  SNovick@ymywha.com
ymywha.com
Ages 4 – 12
Description provided by camp:
“We will offer a comprehensive list of daily activities, run by specialists using Zoom.  It’s not just about sitting in front of a computer screen. There will be fitness, dance, music, and drama. Weekly themes, family nights…Supplies for art, gardening with Lufa Farms, cooking and more. It will be an engaging, active and social environment that encourages movement, intellectual stimulation and creativity…and a lot of fun. In person, distanced activities may take place at various times, depending on what can be done safely and within provincial guidelines.

Each week, campers will be introduced to a new theme, such as superheroes, Earth week, food, safari, talent week etc.  There will be an outdoor activity competition – who can get the most points for activities done outdoors (while maintaining social distancing). We have engaged an ABA Specialist as our ‘roving’ staff member. We recognize that the pandemic can be stressful for kids; these are difficult times and we need to be sensitive to what campers might be going through individually. We have developed a quiet space for anyone who wishes to just listen to music or have some one-on-one with the ABA. Camp is $165/wk for Y members and $185/wk for non-members.”

Arts camp

Description provided by camp:
“As an alternative to the Visual Arts Centre’s in-person day camp, we are offering diverse and stimulating online programming for students ages 4 to 17.  We will be using the Zoom application to share our creativity with our students. Each week, we will discover a different facet of our theme: Art and humanism. Classes will take place in a two-hour format with two, fifteen minutes breaks where the participants will be guided to dance, do yoga, sing or enjoy some relaxation time. Parents can register their child for the full eight-week session or for one or two weeks during the period.  Some classes happen twice a week and others only once.  Even if we’re going online this summer, we are still making sure all our students receive individual attention, a lot of feedback and follow all the steps to complete their projects by limiting the number of students to no more than 12 people per class. The price per week is between $25 to $50 and for the full eight-week session between $200 and $400. A box of art material is available if the participants register for the full session at the cost of $40. We also offer one-day workshops on specific techniques like Embroidery or Watercolor and those last for three hours and are available at the cost of $37.50 each.”
