Dance classes for kids with special needs

The Studio by Funky Feet will offer dance classes that will focus on increasing kids' fine motor skills, movement patterns and alignment.

To get your little ones moving and grooving, The Studio by Funky Feet will be offering a free trial class for elementary school-aged children with special needs on March 12. It is geared towards children with high-functioning autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.

Funky Feet President Livia Avrith said the goal of the class is to get kids to break out of their shells, be active and have fun in a safe environment. Classes will be led by a dance instructor along with a childcare worker with experience in the field of special needs. They will focus on increasing the kids’ fine motor skills, movement patterns and alignment and will encourage social interaction and verbal communication. These classes will follow an unconventional dance program concentrating on singing, association and creative movement instead of traditional step counting.

Parents are asked to remain at the studio during the trial class. Afterwards, kids will be separated by age and abilities and can sign up for a six-week session beginning March 26. Groups will be made up of approximately six to eight children.

The free trial class will take place between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at 2115 St. Regis Blvd. in D.D.O. To reserve a spot, call 514-684-7300. For more information, visit thestudiobyfunkyfeet.ca.
