Contest for teens challenges them to create a French podcast

Teens who enjoy being creative and telling stories are invited to take part in a new contest. Launch Your Podcast is open to students in Secondary 1 to 5 and first year of CEGEP. To participate, students must team up in groups of up to three people to create a French podcast on the theme: The impact of a major figure, real or fictional, on your life or society.

The contest was created by French for the Future, the Salon du Livre de l’Outaouais, the French Embassy and Transistor Media.

Mélanie Rivet, executive director of the Salon du Livre de l’Outaouais, says the organizers wanted to pick a theme that will not limit youth in their creativity and that will allow them to explore an array of ideas. The podcast can be recorded in a journalistic style or theatrical fashion, whichever best fits the team’s vision.

Encouraging young people to improve French skills

The goal is to encourage young people to practice French, especially teens who only speak the language in a school context. This allows them to practice on their own terms, by talking about something that interests them.  Organizers say it is a great way to get together with friends, practice French and develop writing and storytelling skills.

For teens who don’t have any previous experience in this domain, a webinar will cover the basics of making a podcast and the use of technical tools. Teachers are also invited to sign up for the webinar to learn about the world of podcasting and to encourage their students to sign up for the contest.

The podcast must be submitted by January 13, 2023. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. First prize is an all-expense paid trip to the Salon du Livre de l’Outaouais and broadcast of the podcast on the radio and at Transistor Media’s Digital Radio Festival. Second prize is a pair of AirPods for each team member and third prize is a book.
