Conference promotes female empowerment and leadership
For the third year of the Women and Leadership Montreal Conference, organizers have decided to hold an event specifically geared at motivating teen girls as well as adult women.
The conference is presented by the Association of Women Leaders in Action, a non-profit organization dedicated to female empowerment in the community. The morning will be geared towards girls ages 13 to 18, and the afternoon will be for women ages 19 years and up. Different seminars will be held throughout the day and will be led by professionals or experts in their respective fields on topics such as business development and financing, entrepreneurship and leadership, and the role of social media.
“This conference allows women to tell their stories and inspire others to follow their dreams,” said founder and organizer Emmanuella Michel.
The idea behind the young women’s conference, which is new this year, is to bring in young women to empower their peers. The conference will feature a talk by Malie-Ana Dumais, a 13-year-old jewelry designer, Houda Hatem, a nutrition and dietetics student at McGill University, and TV personality Sabine Daniel.
Michel, the founder of the Sarah-Emmanuella PPD Clinic, a personal and professional development clinic in the West Island, says a highlight of the afternoon will be the talk by Dr. Carrie Barron, a board certified psychiatrist and psychoanalyst from the faculty of the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons who will be discussing her book, The Creativity Cure, which tries to help people find explore creative potential.
The event takes place March 12. A breakfast will be offered for the morning conference, and DJ Sweet Laroc will provide live music throughout the day. The young women’s conference and workshops takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $15. The afternoon workshops for adults begin at 1 p.m. and Dr. Barron speaks at 4 p.m., with cocktails to follow. To attend Dr. Barron’s talk alone costs $40, tickets for the workshops and the speaker cost $60. The event takes place at the Universel Hotel, 5000 Sherbrooke St. E.
