Classes offered for kids with autism
Two local dancers, who are also mothers of children with autism, have founded a company called Stars and Steps to offer ballet, hip-hop and yoga classes to children on the autism spectrum. Andrea Altman, co-founder and hip-hop instructor, says she feels that that there is nobody better to teach these classes than parents with autistic children. “We have the patience, knowledge and sympathy to deal with everyone in a class.”
An assistant will be present in every class. Parents and guides are welcome to stay, watch and enjoy snacks while their children explore movement. Altman feels dance is a great way to reach autistic children. “It’s a chance for them to feel like normal kids for a few hours,” she says.
Classes will run on Sundays from January 9 to March 13 in N.D.G. Lessons are 55 minutes and appropriate for kids between the ages of 4 and 16. Cost is $240 for ballet, $210 for yoga and $190 for hip-hop lessons. For more information, and to register for classes, call (514) 562-5965, or visit www.starsandsteps.com.
