A celebration of families is taking place from May 9 to 15, 2022 with events and activities planned across the province. Under the theme Stepping Up for Families, this year’s edition of Quebec Family Week aims to raise awareness of the issues that many families are facing — particularly after the strain of the last two years. These include home and work balance, financial burdens, supporting informal caregivers, and creating family support systems. With restrictions easing across the province and normality slowly returning, the Réseau wants to see all aspects of society stepping up to support families and help them thrive.
The annual event from the Réseau pour un Québec famille brings together community organizations, schools, municipalities, and health and social services, and acts as a promotion and appreciation of family while highlighting different challenges they face.
A week of activities
From N.D.G. to Gaspé, there’s something for every interest. Just some of the activities being offered over the course of the week include workshops for teens on how to go about searching for a job, tennis lessons for families, girls’ hockey open houses, yoga for toddlers, family picnics, spaghetti dinners, and music shows.
An annual event, Quebec Family Week was created in 1995 and held for the first time in1996. It stems from National Family Week, which had about 10 editions. Community and city partners support the event by distributing promotional material and promoting the initiative in their own networks. Every year, several hundred activities highlighting the importance of family are organized by various groups across the province.
The date was picked to coincide with the United Nations resolution 47/237, which proclaimed May 15 of each year as the International Day of Families, a day for nations to recognize the problems families face, and to improve the capacity of nations to adopt comprehensive policies to deal with them.
