A bonnie good time at Glengarry Highland Games

Whether you’re interested in exploring your Scottish roots or are not even a wee bit Scottish, you’re invited to attend the Glengarry Highland Games on July 29 and 30, 2022.

After a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers of the 73rd edition are thrilled to once again welcome locals and visitors to the Kenyon Agricultural Fairgrounds in Maxville Ontario, about a one-hour drive west of Montreal.

The two-day event draws competitors and spectators from across Canada and the US in a celebration of Scottish ancestry, music, dance, foods, and traditional sports.

Throughout the event, guests can watch awe-inspiring traditional Scottish athletic competitions, which include heavyweight events such as hammer, sheaf and caber toss by athletes from across Canada and the US. There will also be highland dancers springing into step, the Canadian Armed Forces Primary Reserve tug of war, and An Cruinneachadh — historical fencing with the Scottish small sword, highland single stick and highland broadsword.

Of course, the Games wouldn’t be complete without bagpipers, and both days will showcase some of the finest from the area and beyond. Listen to your favourites in the Solo Piping & Drumming Competitions, witness the North American Pipe Band Championships, and make sure to be near the grandstand because the Massed Highland Fling and Massed Pipe Bands is a spectacular performance (it gives me goosebumps!)

Children’s activities include the Junior Heavyweight Events for kids 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, an introduction to highland broadsword using foam swords and fencing masks, and track events with races from 60 to 800 metres. Registration for junior events is currently underway so be sure to check the website for details and deadlines.

New this year is an area especially for young children where they can play, relax in the shade, see the animals at the petting zoo, watch a falcon display, and enjoy face painting, a bouncy castle, music, and puppet shows.

There is also the “Up The Glens 5k Kilt Run”, fiddle and harp workshops, a British car display, the clans parade, whisky tasting, and food concessions and vendors specializing in Celtic products.
