A centre for women offers various workshops
The West Island Women's Centre is offering different activities and workshops for their fall session
With the summer in our rearview mirrors, the West Island Women’s Centre (WIWC) is getting ready to welcome a number of women for its fall session of workshops and courses. For more than 40 years, the non-profit organization has catered to women through support groups, outreach programs and workshops. There are groups for women looking to share their experience with childbirth, immigration or the loss of a child. There are also free seminars once a month about various health-related topics.
Workshops for teenage girls at several West Island high schools address topics like sexuality, positive body image, social media and self-defense.
Executive Director Karen Henchey says the goal is to try to improve the overall quality of life for all women regardless of age, socio-economic or cultural background. “We want to be available to women at whatever stage they are at in their lives,” she adds.
Daily workshops include drawing, choir, journaling, knitting and language classes. If you feel like getting your sweat on, there are multiple workout and dance sessions. The centre also offers courses for new moms with their little ones, including music lessons and yoga. But if moms would like to opt for some personal time, they can register their kids for the free daycare services.
Registration opens Sept. 8. Courses begin Sept. 19 and run between 10 and 12 weeks. A membership costs $25 and prices per class will vary. The centre is located at 11 Rodney Ave., Pointe-Claire.
