Party service creates a superstar experience

At My Studio Party, a studio engineer sets up amplifiers, microphones and other equipment so kids can record a song

For her daughter’s 10th birthday, Kimberly Ross wanted to plan something memorable. “We’ve done cooking, karaoke and dance parties,” Ross says. “If it’s out there, we’ve done it, and we just wanted something unique.”

She searched online for an activity that would make Lauren’s first double-digit bash a hit, but came up short until she stumbled upon a West Island Mother’s Facebook post.

It was for a mobile, music-recording service called My Studio Party. Since her daughter has an affinity for all things musical, she reached out to professional recording artist and co-founder Claire Hayek and discovered that the service lets you walk the red carpet, record a song and live out the pop star dream.

Hayek, along with producer and musician Rob MacDonald, launched My Studio Party in 2015. “We wanted to bring music into people’s homes and make it accessible,” Hayek said.

During the one-hour party sessions, an animator sets up a red carpet and snaps paparazzi pictures of guests. After playing around with costumes and accessories, a studio engineer sets up amplifiers, microphones and other equipment in order to record a song of their choosing over an instrumental track.

There are four packages available for kids and teens between the ages of 7 and 17 at varying prices. The Pop Star package for kids aged 7 to 9 includes vocal warm-ups and learning a little bit about how the studio works, while in the Super Star package for ages 10 to 12, more time is devoted to learning about technical components like feedback and song structure.

In the Teen Social Media package for ages 13 to 17, participants are encouraged to share their experience or show off their vocal talents on Snapchat, Instagram and other platforms. At the end of all of the sessions, the track is mixed and guests receive a digital copy of their accomplishment. Those who want to add some movement into the event can register for the Dance Star birthday package where kids aged 7 to 12 can learn choreography as well as record a song.

For her birthday, Lauren and six friends sang a rendition of Fight Song by American musician Rachel Platten. “It was an amazing experience,” Ross says. “It was so much fun to see the girls get their inner diva on.”

There are additional features available at an extra cost like tattoos, loot bags, photos, a video highlight reel and songs. My Studio Party is not just for children’s birthday parties, though. The service is also available for bachelorette parties, corporate events, daycares and weddings.

For Hayek, the most rewarding part is seeing how well people respond to the recording process and express themselves creatively. “Sometimes people surprise you,” she says. “They get a little more confident and burst out of their bubble and just have a great time.”
