New math-focused tutoring centre opens in Pierrefonds
Seriously Addictive Maths (S.A.M.) focuses on a teaching method out of Singapore that encourages logic and critical thinking
On Oct. 5, a math enrichment program for elementary-level students will open a new location in Pierrefonds. S.A.M. (Seriously Addictive Mathematics) Learning Centre helps children aged 4-12 with math and problem solving through the Singapore Math Method, which encourages logic and critical thinking. Students are taught in small groups with no more than eight students at a time and there is always at least one instructor for every four students.
Kids in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten (aged 4-6) learn the basics of math through games, hands-on activities and stories. The program teaches them how to count, write, associate and visualize numbers, as well as how to do simple addition and subtraction.
Grade 1 and 2 students learn the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of math through material and visual representation. Instructors reinforce what students are already learning in the classrooms and ask questions to improve their logic and critical thinking.
Students in grades 3-6 use worksheets as well as visual and interactive exercises to improve their problem-solving skills.
The centre’s Remedial Learning and Tutoring program is available to students in grades 1 through 6 who need extra help. Instructors offer one-on-one sessions that cater to a child’s specific problem areas.
The Singapore Math Method was developed in the 1980s following a major shift in the Singaporean education system. In 1982, the government mandated the Ministry of Education to revamp its entire program to help improve students’ understanding of math, sciences and literature. The new approach focused on problem-solving as opposed to computational and procedural learning.
S.A.M. opened its first Canadian location in N.D.G. last year and the new centre is located at 4922 St. Jean Blvd. in Pierrefonds.
