Seeking young entrepreneurs

This annual event is designed to encourage kids to have a bash at starting their own business

If your kids long to make a little pocket money with a lemonade stand or have an entrepreneurial spirit, they’ll want to know about an  event next month.

On June 16, thousands of children across Quebec will test their business skills during La grande journée des petits entrepreneurs, an annual event designed to encourage kids to have a bash at entrepreneurship.

The event encourages kids aged 5-12 to sell lemonade, crafts, comics or offer  services like lawn mowing, weed-pulling, or whatever else they can dream up. Children’s businesses will be mapped on an app to make it easy for prospective customers to find them on the big day.

This is the fifth year of the event and organizers hope to recruit 5,000 children from across the province to participate.

According to Isabelle Genest, who co-founded the event with a small group of fellow entrepreneurs, running a business — even for only a day — teaches important values to children that will benefit them no matter what they choose to do in the future.

“It creates a sense of resilience, creativity, ambition and pride,”  Genest said.  “We are convinced that later on in life those kids will already have the belief that they can do something and hit the target when they put their mind and effort to it.”

Registration is $5 thanks to support from sponsors such as the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. Although currently the website, app and resource materials for the event are only in French, Genest said organizers hope to have an English version as soon as they can find sponsors to cover the cost of translation.
