Free Museum Day has become a mammoth event

Visitors can choose from more than 30 museums and 100 exhibits around Montreal for free on May 28

There are many reasons to head out to one of the city’s great museums on May 28. Apart from no admission cost, there will be free shuttles to bring visitors to participating museums and it will be free to use BIXI bikes all day.

Visitors can see the Hetep Bastet mummy at the UQAM art gallery, enjoy the circus arts collections at TOHU, explore the five American ecosystems at the Biodome, ponder the existence of life on other planets at the Planetarium, or join an art workshop inspired by Edmund Alleyn’s work at the Contemporary Art Museum. With more than 100 exhibits at 36 participating museums, there is something to appeal to every family.

Many museums are also offering special workshops and creative arts activities. There will be free concerts at the McCord and Marguerite-Bourgeoys museums as well as at St. Joseph’s Oratory. The Redpath museum will have dinosaur-themed presentations and activities, The Canadian Guild of Crafts will have a creative paper arrowhead sash workshop with storytelling and songs, and there will be old-fashioned dress-up at the Château Ramezay.

The meeting point for the free STM shuttle buses will be on the Promenade des Artistes, in the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles, where there will be a number of activities organized from the first edition of a giant museum-themed quiz to performances by Nunavik Inuit artists, face painting for kids and a photo booth.

Montreal Museums Day began 30 years ago as a partnership between the Montreal Museums Society and the Société de transport de Montreal (STM), beginning with four buses shuttling visitors to 11 museums. As of this year, the event has grown to a fleet of 38 buses heading to and from 36 museums.

Complete information on programs and schedules is available at museesmtl.org and the free Musées MTL iPhone app. In the app, participating museums are marked with MMD in front of their names.
