A glimpse of a pair of bright wings fluttering through a garden is enough to make anyone smile. So it’s no wonder the Montreal Botanical Garden and Insectarium’s Butterflies Go Free event, which features the release of thousands of these beautiful insects within the lush indoor atrium, has remained such a popular event for families. The annual butterfly bonanza is back for its 22nd year, and will now offer fixed-time tickets to better manage the crowds.
The shimmering colours, seductive scents and inviting dances butterflies use to attract their mates is captivating but these insects are more than just beautiful. The hues and patterns of their striking wings have also helped them adapt to their environment and protect them from predators.
The Insectarium’s science educators will be on hand in the main exhibition greenhouse at the Botanical Garden to answer questions about the butterflies and explain how these fascinating creatures have evolved over the years.
Butterflies Go Free runs from March 4 to April 28. Tickets for the Botanical Garden and Insectarium are $16 for adults and $8 for children, or $45 per family.
