7 camps geared to kids who love hockey
There are many summer programs across the city that offer kids a chance to hone their hockey and skating skills
I have to admit, I used to find it strange that parents sent their kids to hockey camp in the summer. After such long, cold winters, what kid would want to spend hot summer days in an arena? And why would parents subject their children to this?
But then I became a parent, and I had a boy. My 13-year-old son Max is obsessed with all things hockey. He religiously watches the Canadiens on television, plays hockey for N.D.G., inhales statistical information about players from newspapers and websites, and swears the Habs are going to win the Stanley Cup again, soon.
So, as in past years, I will be one of those parents signing their child up for hockey camp. It will likely be the first week after school ends (as he’s not ready to hang up his skates post spring 3-on-3 hockey) and the last week before school starts back to help prepare for fall try outs.
He loves every minute of hockey camp and, for the record, kids don’t spend all day indoors. Most hockey camps have a mixture of on-ice time as well as outdoor activities. It’s the best of both worlds, according to my son.
